Program Description:

PROGRAM

The Program begins in Bangkok, travels to Malaysia, and then moves to Phuket, Thailand, one of the primary tourism areas of the country and near the Similan islands which is one of the top 10 dive spots of the world. During the first part of the program students study at Prince Sogkla University in Phuket. HBM Students study destination business management, other majors study marketing and management courses with a WSU professor. All students then begin to visit numerous local tour operations such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking and animal and nature adventure sites, and visit ancient Buddhist temples and other cultural heritage. Coursework for HBM majors includes consumer and management evaluations and development of a business plan for a competitive tourism and hospitality company. Coursework for other majors includes learning both principals of marketing and how to write a marketing plan, and principals of management and operations which focuses on the importance of improving organizational effectiveness and developing the individual skills required to successfully manage organizations.

Students stay at a resort in Phuket. HBM students learn best business practices by shadowing managers to practice what they have learned about Thai culture and customs related to the hospitality and tourism industry. Students taking core courses have a more classroom-based experience, with the many excursions serving as the real-world marketing and management case studies.
